| WHY GO GREEN
WHEN PAINTING?
The consequences
of traditional painting methods clearly make the case for going green whenever
you are choosing a painting contractor.
Protects Indoor
Air Quality
According to the
EPA, 9% of the airborne pollutants
creating ground level ozone come from the VOCs in paint as they react with
nitrous oxide and create smog.
The EPA has identified
poor indoor air quality as one of the top five leading health risks in
the United States.
People spend 80%
to 90% of their time indoors. Maintaining a high indoor air quality
is imperative to the health of your family and employees. Upon completion
there is minimal ongoing release or “outgas” of harmful chemicals.
Limits Exposure
to Toxins
The “clean” smell
of new conventional paint is actually vapors being released from toxic
solvents outgassing as the coating dries. Known as volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), these include benzene, formaldehyde, kerosene, ammonia,
toluene and xylene, which are known carcinogens and neurotoxins.
Exposure to VOCs
can result in commonly seen side effects such as skin, eye and respiratory
irritation, headache, dizziness, nausea. Some of these are suspected
of being human carcinogens. Other studies show exposure to paint
fumes can also increase the risk of asthma and pregnancy miscarriage.
EPA estimates that
indoor levels of VOCs were 1,000 times more than outdoor levels after painting.
Prevents Harm
to Our Planet
The disposal of
conventional paints causes landfill and groundwater contamination, whereas
zero VOC paints are not considered hazardous materials.
It takes roughly
2 gallons of water to clean one paint brush and roughly 5 gallons to clean
a roller cover. There are now ways to treat wastewater for proper
disposal by converting the wash water into small inert non-hazardous solid
waste and clear water that is safe for sewer systems. |
